Porth Tyn Tywyn is a south facing storm beach just east of the town of Rhosneigr. Quite a good size beach backed by sand dunes which are great to explore. There is soft sand to the rear of the beach with sections closer to the sea a mixture of sand and shingle.
Tyn Tywyn Beach
To the east of the beach there are a few rocky outcrops that form rockpools at low tide, great for the kids to explore. The section of rock seperates Tyn Towyn beach from Porth Nobla, the rockpools are great and full of life. In summer they are literally teeming with prawns which can be caught with nets. In summer you could have a BBQ with the amount of prawns you will find here, or just chill out relax and enjoy a lazy day at the beach.
Tyn Towyn beach is pretty flat, which is great for playing ball games on. It never gets too busy either, with plenty of parking behind the dunes. Unfortunately its now pay and display but it doesn’t cost too much for the day. There are also toilets on the car park which are open during the holiday season. A bonus as most beaches don’t have these facilities as close by. The car park is a little bumpy so be careful when driving on it. Furthermore you are not allowed to stay overnight either.
Close by is Porth Nobla, Cable Bay, Anglesey Circuit, Rhosneigr and Barclodiad y Gawres. Barclodiad is within walking distance and is a 5000 year old Neolithic burial chamber. Some of these are only a 15 minute walk away. Moreover Keen fishermen are also known to come here to catch Bass and Rays in the evenings and early mornings.
If you are wanting a nice beach and prefer being away from the hustle of busy beaches like Rhosneigr. Tyn Tywyn maybe the beach for you. Just be aware that if you fancy taking a swim that there is no lifeguard presence on this beach. There are shops and other facilities at Rhosneigr which is only a short drive away.
Check it out next time you are in the area or head straight there, you won’t be disappointed. The old listed fishermans cottage above the beach is available as a holiday let too.
The beach parking area is on the A4080, at Ty Croes LL63 5TD
Closest toilets are on the car park behind the beach but they are not always open. Rhosneigr library car park does have public toilets with a 20p charge. LL64 5YJ
Rhosneigr beach is in an absolutely great location. There are beaches on beaches around Rhosneigr with everything you need close at hand.
Great for water sports enthusiasts and families alike. Whether you like to sit, relax and sunbathe or get in amongst it, Rhosneigr beach caters for all.
Rhosneigr is a busy beach in summer with holiday makers heading in their droves to the sun kissed sands. Even when busy the beach it still has plenty of space for more as it is quite vast. Outside of the summer months there can still be great weather here, great for walking the dogs or mini getaways. There are many holiday properties which overlook parts of the beach where you can stay, some of which have there own paths onto the beach!
Soft sand to the rear of the beach warms up nicely during the summer months, the remainder of the beach is tidal. At low tide there are plenty of rockpools around for the kids to discover prawn and crabs as they scuttle around. The river Crigyll is to the right of the beach, where you can play on inflatables or spot the flatfish under foot.
There are no lifeguards on Rhosneigr beach which is something to be aware of if you have the kids, however the water is quite shallow close in. Moreover dogs are allowed on the beach year round too. Unusual for Anglesey beach’s, there is plenty of room for them to roam. Try Crigyll just across the river, there is tons of space for them to run around.
There is boat launching down to the south of the beach, its very popular with jetskis and boats. Tractors are on hand for a fee to help you launch.
A short distance away in the small town of Rhosneigr there is ample parking and public toilets. If you need anythings else there are several restaurants, shops and even a pizza shop if you fancy it. There are also some great little surf shops where you can buy wet suits or even hire them for the day. Paddle boards can also be hired here too for fun on the water. All literally at the top of the road in the picture below.
A great beach in an awesome location with everything you may need less than 5 minutes walk away. Awesome place alround.
Check it out on your next trip to Anglesey, there are some great caravan and camping sites close by too.
The beach can be found here, Beach Road, Rhosneigr, Wales, LL64 5QD

Traeth Crigyll is a vast expanse of sandy beach backed by sand dunes topped with Marram Grass. The beach is huge but 3 separately named beaches all together split by the Afon Crigyll to the east and Ynys Feurig further west. Cymyran to the east, Crigyll is central and Town beach in front of the town of Rhosneigr. Crigyll Beach is also dog friendly all year round too, its great for walks.
The rear of the beach up to the sand dunes is soft sand, ideal for setting up camp for the day ahead. Park up at Rhosneigr and make your way across, Crigyll is a little out of the way from the town centre and there are no facilities. The beach is quite long and shallow as the water comes in so is pretty safe for swimming. Bear in mind there are no lifeguard facilities on this set of beaches. There will also be lots of watersport activities if the weather is nice but its not obtrusive.
Vast expanse of Crigyll Beach
What makes Crigyll beach so special is its isolation. Less frequented than neighbouring beaches, it has the odd dog walker or maybe a horse or two walking the length. If you like having places to yourself this is the place to be. Rhosneigr town beach a little walk away which can become really busy during the summertime with tourists and locals alike.
Crigyll Beach from the dunes
The beach is south westerly facing which means the majority of winds will be sweeping straight onshore into the beach. On hotter days this is welcomed but make sure you wear sun cream as you will burn quickly. To the rear of the sand dunes is RAF Valley, there are regular flights during the week by Hawk jets trainers and visiting fighter jets. For some this is an added bonus, they are loud and low but for the most part the noise disappears into the background.
Crigyll is a mecca for watersports enthusiasts due to its south facing position which makes it perfect for windsurfers etc, Boats can be launched at Rhosneigr with locals offering launching help with their tractors for a price.
Rockpools at low tide
The waters of Crigyll can be crystal clear if there have been no recent storms. Its possible to safely snorkel among the rock pools around the outcrop of Ynys Feurig. At lower states of the tides the rockpools are great for kids, they are full of crabs, Prawns, Sea Anemones and various species of fish. It is possible to see baby squid too! As the tide rises you can safely snorkel around the rocks and what were once the rock pools, Bass, Dogfish and other species come in as the depth rises. Please remember safety first if attempting snorkeling, never leave children unattended.
Sand dunes to the rear of the beach gives great views all round. Moreover they let allow you to watch the aircraft take off and land at Raf Valley during the week. Another cracking place to walk the dogs, just be aware of Adders in the area.
As far as beaches go on Anglesey Crigyll Beach is definitely a shining star. Get in on the action or sit back and relax the day away. Rhosneigr is close by with facilities and places to grab a bite to eat. Not one to miss.
Closest toilets at Rhosneigr library car park. toilets with a 20p charge. LL64 5YJ
Shoreside caravan and camping park is located on the edge of Rhosneigr near the train station. It is only 10 minutes walk to the town centre. It takes around 25 minutes to get there from the Britannia Bridge.
Shoreside camping is a well maintained site with decent and clean facilities. The toilet and shower block has enough facilities to not feel busy. There is also a little park towards the rear of the caravan park where the children can run around and play.
Touring caravan area
The main camping field is to the rear of the grounds so it’s a bit of a walk to the toilets / shower block, but not too bad. The field itself is not entirely flat so choose your spot wisely, tents are usually pitched around the edge of the field. There is enough room in the centre of the field for the kids to play ball games, if its really busy though this area will have tents on it. During the summer holidays this is a very busy site and fills up quickly.
Slide in the children’s play area
At the front of the site by the main road there is also an area for tents, quite a lot of room actually and is more like an over spill. This section puts you closer to the facilities, it also significantly shortens the walk to the beach and town. The main road is pretty quiet during the evenings and at night time so don’t let that put you off. It great if you like fishing too as you don’t have to carry your tackle as far.
Washroom Facilities
Access the road where the statics are located is a path to the sand dunes, the little bridge allows you to get across to the rear of Raf Valley. Great for walking the dogs, runs or a steady stroll. Its also a great vantage point to watch the comings and goings of RAF Valley. Follow the river, either side takes you to the main beach simply choose which side you want and you are set. You can walk across the river easy enough at low tide if needed, it’s only a few inches deep near the sea. The left path takes you to Rhosneigr Beach and crossing the bridge takes you to Cymyran Beach.
Path to the sand dunes, Beach and Raf Valley from Shoreside
Shoreside caravan and camping park is great place to stay, it’s pretty central so nowhere is all that far away. Access to most of Anglesey is available by car in around 25-30 minutes.
Pro’s and con’s? It depends really, given it’s great location and facilities there is one thing that may fit in both boxes. RAF Valley, the planes take off and landing flight path is immediately above. the site. The planes fly low and loud, Monday to Friday. You still get the odd helicopter at the weekend but they don’t generally fly close the the site. So no action at the weekends, personally I wouldn’t mind if they did fly at the weekends. That said they may not be to everyone’s taste, but Shoreside is a very busy place in summer for a reason.
You can get awesome pictures of take off and landings at Raf valley just by the sand dunes. RAF Valley holds a family fun day during summer, we can’t attend but we can still watch and its cracking free air show. You can watch from the site or from the sand dunes to be closer to the action.
Toad in the evening by the river
Walking the river during darkness lets you see animals such as toads that seem to be everywhere. The river its self is full of marine life so take a decent torch and you wont be disappointed. Crabs come in close to the river edges and there are some big fish swimming around, easily picked up with a decent torch.
Afon Crigyll runs behind the park
Recent storms can effect the water clarity around Rhosneigr, a day or two later the water is crystal clear. There are opportunities for a bit of rockpooling on Rhosneigr beach, head down Crigyll Breach to the rocky out crop. Plenty of rockpools in this area and its safe enough for the kids to snorkel in the shallow waters.
Head down the usually desolate Cymyran Beach if you like isolation and tranquility, usually the odd walker or maybe a horse rider will pass and very little else.
The usually quiet Crigyll Beach
Shoreside Caravan and camping at Rhosneigr is £7 per adult and £3 per child per night. Rhosneigr is a Mecca for waterproof enthusiasts and Shoreside caravan and camping is close to the action. There are many who have Jetskis and small boats on the site with their caravans. Its literally the perfect place to stay if you are into watersports.
For me it’s a solid 9/10 and one of the premier campsites on Anglesey due to its location and nearby activities/ facilities.
You can find Shoreside caravan and camping park at:
Crigyll View, Station Rd, Rhosneigr LL64 5QX
Shoreside is as good a campsite in Anglesey as any other though not as secluded as others. What it lacks in that respect it makes up in its location and local amenities. Night time is generally quiet even areas near to the main Rhosneigr road, there is little traffic in the evening. If you like military aircraft then there is your added bonus.
I got one of these to pump up my boat so a couple of air beds is no problem, its rechargeable too. Great bit of kit.
